One Hundred and Seventy Four
I eat yellow apples, not red.
I like pirates, not vampires or zombies.
I love fat cats, not little dogs.
I listen to almost everything, except for country music.
I buy tickets to shows, not purses and clothes.

One Hundred and Sixty Eight
You know,
I was thinking,
what's up with the enigma of the 60's, 70's, and 80's?
I mean, if you think about it, it was JUST LIKE school and friends and family these days. They made good and bad grades, they got together and broke up, they had fights with mom and dad.
What's the difference?
The more I realize how things at that time seemed "just like the present" to them, just as "the present" is to us, none of us realize how cool we are for living right now. Sure, in retrospect, the 60's and 70's and 80's were "like totally RAD" but the older I get the cooler the 90's seems. It's some kind of identity marker: the 90's generation. And the people just young enough to not be able to remember what all went down in the 90's don't really understand our pride, but give it some time and TRENDS (because all things are cyclical) and we'll be back in the prime.
I supposed the thing that makes the older decades living so much more interesting is that we have something to compare it to now: "the normal." But I think the normal could be appreciated and seen as something unique that later generations will rue over.
[damn you. you imminent new year!]

Check this out:
Recently, in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said:
THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?
A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.
To Whom It May Concern:
Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans). They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.
Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don't have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who's skin is all scaly and smells like a fish store?
The choice is perfectly clear to me... I want to be a whale.
P..S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my grandkids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a latte with my friends. With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I am"!

If you scroll over this assumed blank space above ^ and click you cannnn:
- Fill out a form on the topics of formal apologies, acknowledgement of occasion, airing of grievance, declaration of romantic intent, observance of holiday, official invitation, statement of gratitude, and unsolicited feedback.
- You have the option to save the form and print so you can write on it yourself OR they let you write everything in and check boxes on their site.
- And, this is the best/coolest feature, you can scroll to the bottom of the form and select from a drop-down menu a specific type of official stamp to finish the whole shebang.

One Hundred and Thirty Eight
Yeah yeah, two posts in one day... but seriously.
*I AM PSYCHIC*
- I add Chloe Fey on Facebook just to tell her that she was fantastic in the Coterie's production of The Giver and someone posts on the AP Lit blog about The Giver
- I reread the poetry packet, initially skipping over one, but I decided to go back and read it and that ends up being the one poem from that collection that was discussed
- I thought about my old class ring that I NEVER wear or even see around and my sister asks today if I still have it
- I thought about you dying and you had that conversation about what to do if you weren't here anymore
- I want a purple gem stone necklace, you have amethyst earrings the next day and then I go to find Saul Williams' best slam on YouTube and what is it called?? AMETHYST ROCK.
- I think about how much I'd regret not being able to read all these books before I die (including my newest one) and you talk about THAT BOOK
- I always know when Joseph's texts are coming to my phone
- I changed my background to the Ara Pacis's Tellus Relief and we had it on our test today as one of four image ID's out of a total of over 40 to pick from
- I knew he'd ask about Richard's friends killing themselves just before he asked even though the conversation had nothing to do with that
- I was just telling Juju how I think you're stronger than I am and you go off and question your strength completely unprovoked
no. these are not just coincidence. and yes. these were just this week.
and just for shits and giggles (another pattern to be analyzed):

Dorky dude. Sweet song.

Today was good, I think. To fully realize its awesomeness, I think we're long overdue for Ordinary Ovations:
- I tied for the second largest bamboo phallice and Mattsson thought the piece had a nice open composition.
- I came to Park Hill (YES AGAIN, I KNOW, ALL YOU BAD DREAMS CAN GO AWAY) slightly against my will; Peter needed me for "moral support."
- My disconcerting nightmare (as referred to ^) didn't come true, but I think that was simply because I HAD the dream to forewarn me of more realistic expectations. I think it had something to do with Robert, which is a good thing.
- My sister went back to my mom's house finally.
- I'm studying my butt off for art history.
- I was totally psychic about those purple gem stones. No lie. No lie.
- My karma must be getting pretty good by now. : )

One Hundred and Thirty Three
As much as I enjoy the message in this, I theoretically disagree.
We'd be better off if we lived like we were just BORN not as if we were dying, because frankly, children have the most appreciation and freedom from worry and self consciousness. Their souls are so free from their bodies-- they exist inside out instead of being dependent on their outward appearance to feel inwardly soulful.
SO CUTE.

One Hundred and Thirty Two
Yesterday
**************************************
So I was reading some AP Lit blog responses about "what is art" earlier, right? And I can't help but think what isn't art? Is there a such thing? To pass through our minds, the same minds that give birth to the concept of art and the importance on something that in turn labels it art, how is anything in existence NOT art? Doesn't everything we see have meaning to any one person? To me, that's all it takes-- one person's appreciation for that "things" life. Sure, to most people a paperclip doesn't seem like art, but I can assure you SOMEONE cared enough about it through its creation, its usage, its aesthetic to keep it around today. It even could be beyond its function in our lives; it's what we connect it to. I could easily see a story behind a paperclip where someone's lover dies and their only possession they had on their person during their last breath was a stupid little paperclip. I guarantee you their spouse will never forget that momentous piece of metal. Everytime that widow sees a paperclip afterward, what seems like nothing to most of us will speak volumes to them. That one person's appreciation is what makes it art even if it doesn't SEEM like art to the masses. THAT, by far, is the basis of art-- the personal connection.
**********************************
This seriously makes me question the purpose of artistic institutions. Simply based on the idea that it is in the eye of the beholder, like life and religious institutions, how can one person decide ANYTHING for any other being? Shouldn't this all be an individual choice? On that principle, institutions are undermined, because as we all know, institutions are hierarchies of power and the ones in power hold the mysticism over everyone elses' heads.
*THIS JUST IN*
-There is nothing to know.-

One Hundred and Twenty Six
Everything has a moral, if only you can find it.
What is your definition of art? and what is a specific example from your own literary experiences of how the written word is an art form?
Any type of conscious by-product of our existence can be art. It comes from our person-- our unique quiddity. A work that holds meaning for any single human automatically, in my opinion, transforms it into "art."
Literary art continues to baffle me. It's true that we will never be able to express what we're thinking in our minds 100% through our language, but some of us come closer than others. One poem was poignant at a time where the summer heat was unbearable. It's called "August" by Adrienne Rich.
Two horses in yellow light
eating windfall apples under a tree
as summer tears apart milkweeds stagger
and grasses grow more ragged
They say there are ions in the sun
neutralizing magnetic fields on earth
Some way to explain
what this week has been, and the one before it!
If I am flesh sunning on rock
if I am brain burning in fluorescent light
if I am dream like a wire with fire
throbbing along it
if I am death to a man
I have to know it
His mind is too simple, I cannot go on
sharing his nightmares
My own are becoming clearer, they open
into prehistory
Which looks like a village lit with blood
where all the fathers are crying: My son is mine!

so i bought the book thief today. that makes your total come to siddhartha, revolutionary road, hughes & plath: a marriage, and change or die. also, maddie and i went to buy three pumpkins and found our way to joseph's house eventually. his family is super hilarious, his room is so him, and his animals are super cute. after carving pumpkins in independence, we came back to mah house to hand out candy and do weird stuff.

So today ended in a C+ exam grade, Panera with Robert, and a better Grey's episode than Project Runway (not surprising). Also, JA PAK IS A FRAUD. That's all I'm sayin. Ooo ooo, also, I picked up some new poetic vocab: senryu: a short Japanese poem that is similar to a haiku in structure but treats human beings rather than nature, often in a humorous or satiric way and tanka: a Japanese poem of five lines, the first and third composed of five syllables and the rest of seven.
*WHAT-WHAT!!*

One Hundred and Ten
Who do you hang out with Alison?
Uh. No... One?
What's your family like?
I'm not really a family person. My mom was being a beezy so I moved out and my sister and I barely speak. I guess I'm closest with my dad.
What's your major going to be?
Well I would have done INDA but they're getting rid of it and so I'm planning on sculpture. Michael?
Yes?
Just talking to you makes me depressed.

Oh winter.
You're a petty thief.
Pull the sidewalk.
Out from under me.
Frigid air.
Nipping in the open.
Spaces between layers.
Closing off.
You put us inside.
Our caves.

One Hundred and Nine
"It's the bitch of living with nothing going on."
So today I will hopefully find out how I did on our first Art History Exam.
SHITE, I'M NERVOUS.

or not... Thursday it is!
BUT!
I was about to leave the bathroom and Fricke walked in and told me that I look just like one of her students she had 10 years ago and that I sit in the exact same seat so everytime she looks up at me she thinks, "Erica? Wait, no no, Alison." Apparently though, Erica was one of her best students, they're actually good friends now, and she got an A so... I guess that's a fantastic association, eh?
: )
